Wave Garden

Wave Garden is an exploration of the effects of sound on water.

Visitors control two sine waves, creating a hypnotic dance of waves and ripples on the surface of a pool of water under a pyramid of light.

Wave Garden is an interactive light & sound installation which allows participants to control the formation of standing waves in a pool of water. The technical term for this is modal vibrational phenomena, or cymatics. Two knobs send two sine waves to a 400 watt bass transducer mounted under a small pool. The interaction of the two waves can cause patterns from large splashing waves to small, delicate forms that weave across the pool like ice crystals forming on a window.

The pool sits under a ten foot triangular pyramid which is traced with 1500 individually addressable LEDs. Three illuminated buttons allow participants to change the patterns and colors of the pyramid.
